How to Prepare for a Massage

How to enjoy your massageMany people are unsure about how to prepare for a massage. From wearing specific clothing to avoiding eating directly before your massage, there are some helpful things to do to adequately prepare for your massage so that you can get maximum benefits from it.

Here is a list of tips to help you prepare for a massage:

  • Try not to eat close to your massage time, but make sure you aren’t hungry. Eating a lot before a massage (or being hungry during it) can create discomfort, which minimizes the stress-reducing benefits of a massage.
  • Relax before, during and after your massage. Relieve stress by giving yourself plenty of time to get to your appointment. Don’t think about everything you have to do while having a massage, just enjoy it! Also, do not be in a hurry to leave once the massage is over. Taking your time throughout the entire massage process can help reduce stress and increase benefits!
  • Relax your body before, during and after the massage! Breathing normally and take deep breaths to help you relax. Do not hold your breath during a massage, as it adds stress and reduces the effectiveness of the massage.
  • If you plan to wear clothing during your massage, make sure it is loose clothing, such as boxers for men and loose shorts and a sports bra for women.
  • Communicate with your massage therapist! Tell the massage therapist if you have any health concerns or injuries, also tell the massage therapist if there are areas that you do not want massaged, or areas that you really need massaged more than others. Let the massage therapist know if you experience any pain or discomfort during the massage.

Remember to relax all throughout the massage process, even when the massage is over!
